Volunteer Accommodation

Homestay accommodation for volunteers

Volunteers are coming from all over Scotland, the rest of the UK and Europe and beyond to help us deliver the World Orienteering Championships. We are asking residents of Inverness and Moray if they could help a volunteer by providing affordable bed and breakfast in their home. If you can help, or if you are a volunteer seeking accommodation, please see below.

Volunteers

We really appreciate you giving up your time to help us deliver our World Orienteering Championships. We are hoping to be able to offer you friendly, affordable accommodation via the following options:

  • Homestay (Inverness / Moray area)
  • Community / school hall (Inverness / West Moray area)
  • Campsite (Inverness)
  • Youth Hostel (Inverness)

Homestay

This is an informal arrangement between you and a local person that we put in touch with you. You will have a chance to chat to the host and you would need to satisfy yourself that the accommodation and location offered is suitable for you and that you are happy that you will all get along ok. You will also need to agree all arrangements with the host. The arrangement could include bed and breakfast, or bed only with use of a kitchen.

Community / school hall

We are trying to arrange a local school or community hall, with kitchen and showers. We have no further details at present but hope it will be around £10 (GBP) per night.

Campsite

There is a campsite in Inverness which will be open from Friday 31 July to Sunday 9 August. This will be at Bught Park, on the western bank of the River Ness, approximately 5 minutes walking distance to the Event Centre at Eden Court and 10 minutes to Inverness city centre.

Information, costs and the booking link can be found at: http://www.scottish6days.com/2015/campsite. Nightly rates start from £8 per adult or £4 per under 21/student, before additional parking, caravan or campervan charges. Bookings are now open.

Youth Hostel

We can offer a bunk bed in a room at Inverness Youth Hostel with other volunteers for £20 per night including breakfast or £15 without. There is a kitchen for self-catering. The Hostel is approximately 10 minutes walking distance to Inverness city centre and 20 minutes to the Event Centre.

How to request accommodation

If you would like to request accommodation, please contact  and state "Volunteer seeking accommodation" in the subject of your message, then simply provide the following details:

  • Your name and contact information
  • What dates you are seeking accommodation
  • Your travel needs, do you have a car or require public transport
  • Your age, gender and whether you are a smoker or have any allergies (eg pets)
  • Your preferred accommodation option – Homestay, Community / school hall, Campsite or Youth Hostel

Locals

Homestay

Would you consider offering a warm welcome and some local hospitality to one of our volunteers? Or do you know a neighbour who would? We have hundreds of volunteers who are giving up their time to help us deliver this world class event in Moray and Inverness. They are travelling and staying at their own cost and we are trying to do everything we can to support them. Many will stay in hostels and rented accommodation but some would prefer a more affordable and sociable alternative of staying with a local.

Volunteers will need one or more nights during these dates:

  • Saturday 25 to Friday 31 July - some spaces needed for volunteers coming to set up (they may have own accommodation booked from 1 August)
  • Saturday 1 to Friday 7 August - event time

How to offer homestay accommodation

If you are a resident of Inverness and Moray and could help a volunteer by providing affordable bed and breakfast, or bed only with use of a kitchen, in your home, please contact  stating "Local offering accommodation" in the subject of your message, then simply provide the following details:

  • Your name and contact information
  • Your address
  • The dates you can offer accommodation
  • Details of local, accessible public transport
  • Any preferences for type of guest e.g. gender, age, non-smoker
  • Details of any pets you have

We will then:
Put you in touch with the volunteer - by sending you their contact details so that you can speak to them. You can have a chat, see if you get on and agree any house rules! It is entirely up to you to decide if you are happy to take this person and make your own arrangements with them.

What will it be like?

We can't see into the future but at the Commonwealth Games, hosts found that they lived the excitement of the event through their guests. The volunteer will return home to you weary and full of news about the day's sporting action.

Camping Equipment

Some volunteers intend to stay at the campsite in Inverness but are flying from Scandinavia and are unable to bring tents or other camping equipment. Would you consider offering the loan of a tent / camping stove / etc?

How to lend camping equipment

If you could help a volunteer by providing a loan of camping equipment, please contact stating "Local offering camping equipment" in the subject of your message, then simply provide the following details:

  • Your name and contact information
  • Details of the equipment you can loan
  • Dates that the equipment is available

We will then:
Put you in touch with the volunteer - by sending you their contact details so that you can speak to them and be comfortable knowing who is borrowing your camping kit, as well as discussing care and return. It is entirely up to you to decide if you are happy to lend your equipment!

Disclaimer

The event organisers are extremely grateful to host families who are kindly offering accommodation to volunteers who are travelling to Highlands and Moray to help deliver this World Championships. WOC2015 can only introduce hosts and helpers and we ask both parties to speak to each other before the event and agree details and only proceed if you are both happy with the arrangements. We do not make any guarantees in connection with finding or filling places.
